Starting off with our shoot, we decided to take a look on how the impact of streetwear fashion has influenced the youth in terms of getting in the urban lifestyle and scene. Here, we ask Kat with regards to how her peers influenced her to further discover her identity through the use of streetwear.
Name: Katrina Paner
Nickname: Kat
Location: Fairview, Quezon City, Philippines
Currently an: Student in Miriam College

Shirt: Thrasher
Hoodie: Fear of God
Sneakers: Adidas NMD

Shirt: Thrasher
Hoodie: Stussy
Mon: Hello! Tell us your name and what do you do.
Kat: My name is Katrina Paner, I'm a student here in Miriam College.
M: So, can you name us local and foreign streetwear brands you're in to?
K: Supreme, Thrasher. Yung mga ganon lang. (Just like those only).
M: Other brands?
Shawn: Any other brands you're in to?
K: Adidas.
M: So, what is your definition of streetwear fashion for young Filipino women?
K: Hmm, yung parang suot ng mga dancers (Like what the dancers usually wear).
M: Not just necessary dancing alone? Or other students who are into dancing?
K: Yung mga students kasi sa MC, kung ano trip suotin ng mga hypebeasts. (Like the students here in MC, the hypebeast where what they like).
M: Ah, so tingin mo parang fad lang siya talaga? (Ah, so you think this is just a fad only?)
K: Fad lang talaga (Just the fad).
M: So it's not really for the culture itself. (To Shawn)
S: Yeah, I think it's not based in the culture. More of the style talaga.
M: More of style, would you say? (To Kat)
K: Just the style, yeah.

M: So, having said that, what can you say about the streetwear scene growing here in the Philippines?
K: More people are getting in to streetwear because, famed people are getting into it as well. Kids are making gaya (imitating) celebrities, like James Reid among others.
M: What made you like streetwear?
S: What made you get into the fashion?
K: Dati, shoes lang naman talaga ako (laughs) (Before, I was just into sneakers). It was when I went out with friends, they got me into brands like Thrasher and Supreme and that's how I got into them. It was also the rappers that I see on TV that got me into streetwear as well.
M: Since you said rappers, do you have that sense of fulfilment when you get the items that they wear, or are you just into their style?
K: Just their style.
M: Did any Filipino celebrity get you into wearing streetwear?
K: No.
M: You've mentioned James Reid earlier, would you say he has somehow inspired you to get into this fashion style?
K: Well, kinda. Kung ano nalang nakikita ko sa Instagram niya, dun nalang ako kumukuha. (Whatever is on his Instagram, I'll get inspiration from there.)
M: Do you feel there is discrimination with young Filipinas who are wearing streetwear right now?
S: Do you personally feel any discrimination around you with your peers from wearing that sort of stuff (streetewear)? It does not have to be necessarily from your peers, pwede rin (could be) sa family, authority, etc.
K: Minsan lang (Sometimes). Kasi kung streetwear, boyish ang tawag. (Because if it's streetwear, it's called boyish).
S: How do I explain, you know how guys wear women's clothes but they really don't get much criticism for it? Do you feel it's unfair for women to get criticized for wearing men's clothes?
K: Yeah, mejo unfair sa amin. (Yeah, it is unfair for us.)
S: Like, why do you think it is unfair for you?

K: Like, if my friends are in streetwear, parang friends nila lalaki, sinasabi na sinuot mo lang yan kasi it's pretty (if my friends are in streetwear, their guy friends will tell that you're wearing that because you think it's pretty). It's more of a passion thing for their guys friends kasi.
M: So, you'd consider yourself someone who dresses for the passion?
K: Yeah.
S: You really like what you wear and you wear it because you're not joining in?
K: Yeah.
M: How would you see the streetwear scene for young Filipinas 5 years from now? How would see it, as a woman who is passionate about streetwear?
K: Yeah, I think in 5 years, more women will start wearing it.
M&S: What makes you say that?
K: Because like in 2017, more women are getting into streetwear na. So I think, the scene would grow more for women to get into the fashion and the culture as well.
S: So, do you think this will still be a fad, or do you think this will stick?
K: This will stick into culture for young Filipinas to get into.
